At 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide, Luxembourg Airport's only runway had not been fully renovated since 1984. The renovation included structural reinforcement of the lateral runway strips, a new water drainage system and the replacement of all lighting with 1,500 LEDs, saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. The teams from Colas, Felix Giorgetti SàRL and C. Karp-Kneip Constructions SA were responsible for earthworks, asphalt work, sewerage, dry networks, road markings, etc., and those of JDC Airports SA for aeronautical lighting.
In order to limit the impact on airport operations, the work was carried out mainly at night, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., a real challenge for the site teams, who had to return the runway to the customer each morning in conditions that allowed air traffic to resume in complete safety. More than 300 people were mobilized at the peak of the project, which took place over two seasons, from April to October in 2021 and 2022. A benchmark project for the teams from Colas Projects, Colas Belgium and Colas France.
